Why students fail mathematics.

By Adelanwa Adeniyi

Mathematics is one of the core subjects for any students in secondary school.
consequently, in pursue of admission into any higher institution of learning in Nigeria, you must pass mathematics and English language including any other three subjects with a minimum of (c).
Firstly, facilities/instructional materials that are capable of promoting effective teaching and learning which when available, enable a professional teacher performs better are lacking in various schools especially in public schools.
Secondly, ‘phobia’ of figures is another predicament. Most students including teachers are so scared of dealing with numbers. Therefore, pupils/students should be stimulated to be figure ‘mania’ but not figure ‘phobia’
Thirdly, some of the hindrance to the learning and teaching of mathematics are merely artificial because they arose as a result of human errors. These are created by mere imagination and that their immediate solutions are complete re-assessment and re-evaluation of our psyche and positive attitude to the subjects.
Fourthly, teachers of mathematics should be well motivated through provision of special package should be discriminatory by giving to some and envying others. As on incentive, I have recommended that scholarship should be awarded to potentials teachers of mathematics when they gain admission to study more in higher institution of learning.
Fifthly, parents particularly should provide toys and play materials that will stimulate children interest in the subject later in life. Hence, I want to enjoined all the teachers of mathematics to focus seriously on the way of ameliorating    factors militating against the subject development.
